How To Add EPEL Repository To CentOS/Fedora/Redhat

Q: How to add EPEL repository to yum in CentOS/Fedora/Redhat? 


EPEL repository a large collection of packages based on RPM distributions. Follow the step by step instructions below to install the EPEL repository to yum in your CentOS/Redhat/Redhat linux systems. Login as root user and run the commands. If your system is use a http proxy server to access internet,
configure that proxy server to use yum commands.



Add RPMforge Repository
[root@server ~]# wget http://ftp.riken.jp/Linux/fedora/epel/RPM-GPG-KEY-EPEL-6
[root@server ~]# rpm --import RPM-GPG-KEY-EPEL-6

[root@server ~]# vi /etc/yum.repos.d/epel.repo
#Creating a new epel.repo file, Add the following 5 lines(Green) to the new file.
[epel]
name=EPEL RPM Repository for Red Hat Enterprise Linux
baseurl=http://ftp.riken.jp/Linux/fedora/epel/6/$basearch/
gpgcheck=1
enabled=0
#And now save the file.


Install package from EPEL Repository
[root@server ~]# yum --enablerepo=epel install [package]
eg: # yum --enablerepo=rpmforge list wine
eg: # yum --enablerepo=rpmforge install wine

         RPMforge repository is a collaboration of dag packages and provides over thousands of usefull packages like wine, media players, multimedia packages and lots more for RPM based distributions like Redhat, Centos and Fedora. All the packages are in .RPM format.

You can use RPMforge repository along with your operating system's own software repository. And it will not replace your default repository


Add RPMforge Repository
Login as superuser(root) and run the below commands.
[root@server ~]# wget http://dag.wieers.com/rpm/packages/RPM-GPG-KEY.dag.txt
[root@server ~]# rpm --import RPM-GPG-KEY.dag.txt
[root@server ~]# vi /etc/yum.repos.d/rpmforge.repo


#Creating a new rpmforge.repo file, Add the following 5 lines(Green) to the new file.
[rpmforge]
name=RPMforge RPM repository for Red Hat Enterprise Linux
baseurl=http://ftp.riken.jp/Linux/dag/redhat/el6/en/$basearch/rpmforge/
gpgcheck=1
enabled=0

#Now save the file.

Install package from RPMforge Repository
[root@server ~]# yum --enablerepo=rpmforge install <package name>
eg: # yum --enablerepo=rpmforge list wine
eg: # yum --enablerepo=rpmforge install wine

Yum with Proxy Server Fedora, CentOS and Redhat

If your RPM based Linux System use proxy server to use internet(not connected internet directly), you cannot use "yum" commands by default.To Use yum commands to install packages via proxy internet, follow the below method.


Yum Behind Proxy
Step1: Edit yum.conf file located in /etc/yum.conf and specify the proxy server and port number,

and also apecify proxy username and password if required
[root@server ~#]vi /etc/yum.conf
#disable the line starting with "cachedir=/var/cache/yum/$basearch/$releasever"
by adding a "#" in front of the line. and add a new line just below and specify your internet proxy server ip address and port number in below format.(Reboot PC to take effect)


Use proxy_username and proxy_password (only if applicable)
#cachedir=/var/cache/yum/$basearch/$releasever
proxy=http://192.168.10.200:3128
proxy_username=username
proxy_password=password
Yum via http proxy server
#And save the yum.conf file, and try package management with YUM..
